An introduction from Farmer Jen

So here it is, the first farm-blog post for Nesletun! I have been wanting to start this blog for awhile now, but the thought of having to blog på norsk has felt intimidating. I assume that, with time, I will attempt to do so, but until then I will communicate in my mother-tongue. And I assume that Marte will also contribute with posts of her own, which will, of course, be på norsk.

The foothills of Southern Idaho, not far from where I first started farming

I will keep the introduction brief:
There was a time when I blogged regularly about life on the farm, back in the USA. I moved to Norway several years ago, but before that, I lived an unconventional life in the «wild west» of rural USA. Over 15 years ago, in a tiny river valley at the base of the mountains in Southern Idaho (a steep, barren terrain we call ‘the foothills’), I started with 3 chickens and a quaint garden. Over the years, farming grew from experiment to passion.
Before I moved to Norway, I had grown, foraged, and butchered nearly all of my own food, raised a wide variety of animals, and lived off-grid in caravans or tiny cabins for most of 7 years. While I lived and traveled across most of the USA, most of my farming was done in the mountains of Montana. Montana lies in the Northwest, the region where I grew up. The climate of the Northwestern mountains of Montana is fairly similar to Norwegian’s Østlandet, although here it is not as snowy or cold.

The humble beginnings of Nesletun

So here I am now, in beautiful, lovable Norway. One’s natural passions are hard to ignore, so of course it has only been natural for me to pursue farming here as well! In this blog, we can share about our goals, projects, and experiences over time. If there is anything you wonder about, feel free to leave a comment!
